It’s a war in here…

For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. (Romans 7:22-23)

There are so many wars going on in the world around us.

But did you know there is also a war in us between Obedience to authority and personal conscience? Which do you think usually wins out…

There were experiments conducted in 1963 by Milgram known as the Milgram experiment focusing on the conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience.

Milgram (1963) was interested in researching how far people would go in obeying an instruction if it involved harming another person.

Stanley Milgram wanted to see how easily ordinary people could be influenced into committing atrocities, for example, Germans in WWII.

His experiment tells us that ordinary people are likely to follow orders given by an authority figure, even to the extent of killing an innocent human being.  Obedience to authority is ingrained in us all from the way we are brought up.

People tend to obey orders from other people if they recognize their authority as morally right and/or legally based. This response to legitimate authority is learned in a variety of situations, for example in the family, school, and workplace.

The extreme willingness of adults to go to almost any lengths on the command of an authority constitutes the chief finding of the study.

While looking at these studies it gave me insight into how our mind works.

The bible always tells us that Jesus has the authority over everything (Ephesians 1:20-21), but Satan has been given control/power over the world and we are in a constant struggle to overcome it. (Ephesians 6:12)

(We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.(1 John 5:19))

Germans were led by an authority to do things they would’t do otherwise. We aren’t any exceptions. We are also being led to things we don’t want to do, being obedient to the world and its ways and walking the path as everyone else, falling into the trap of peer pressure.

We are in a constant struggle and it is not an easy fight. God knows it and has given us the weapons to overcome it. He has equipped us with the word to help in standing strong.

When we do not know what to do in a situation always go back to the word and seek God’s guidance. It will be the sword that helps us to overcome the rulers of this world. Also listening to the holy spirit that dwells in us helps us accomplish that.

If you are struggling with something always remember God came to dwell among us to show us how to overcome the world. He went through the same temptations that we are going through and showed us a path that makes us hope that we can overcome it too someday. That someday can only be possible by being in the presence of God but not by your own strength and will.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)

Have a blessed day…
